Effect of biologic treatment on COVID immunity
Biologic therapies targeting the IL-4 or IL-5 pathways are highly effective for treating asthma and related conditions but may influence the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. A study evaluated the antibody and cellular immunity following SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination in patients on biologics (PoBs) compared to immunologically healthy controls not on biologics (NBs). Results showed that PoB patients had lower levels of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, neutralization capacity, and virus-specific B and CD8 T-cell counts six months post-vaccination. These findings suggest the need for more individualized immunization strategies for patients on IL-4 or IL-5 pathway-blocking biologics...Full abstract here.
